Gastro-oesophageal candidiasis: diagnosis by brush cytology.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal candidiasis by brush cytology was studied in two groups. In eight immunosuppressed patients clinically suspected to have candidiasis, fungal infection was confirmed on six occasions, and a diagnosis of herpetic oesophagitis was established in the other two cases. Among 482 gastric and oesophageal brushings clinically unsuspected candidiasis was found on a further 12 occasions. Coexisting abnormalities including carcinoma, lymphoma, and postradiation oesophagitis were also identified by brushing. Of the 18 patients with cytologically confirmed candidiasis, endoscopic biopsies were available in 13, but histological diagnosis of fungal infection was possible in only two (15.5%).

Gastro-oesophageal candidiasis.
A prospective search for gastro-oesophageal candidiasis was made by histological examination of all the biopsies taken from 465 patients endoscoped consecutively during a 12 month period. The criterion for diagnosis was the demonstration of infiltration of tissue or ulcer slough by yeasts and hyphae. Nineteen cases of candidiasis were found giving an overall incidence of 4%. There were 12 cases...
متن کاملEndoscopic fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal and colorectal malignancies.
In a prospective study we compared the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic fine needle aspiration cytology with that of brush cytology and forceps biopsy in relation to gross tumour pattern and site in 265 confirmed consecutive cases of malignancy of the oesophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum. Aspiration cytology gave the highest diagnostic accuracy (94%), which was significantly better than that...
متن کاملEvaluation of endoscopic brush and biopsy touch smear cytology and biopsy histology in the diagnosis of carcinoma of the lower oesophagus and cardia.
A four-year prospective study of endoscopic cytology and histology was carried out on 64 patients suspected of having a malignant lesion at the junction of the lower oesophagus and cardia. The final diagnosis was malignant in 18 and benign in 46 cases. Biopsy touch smear cytology was the most accurate technique with a sensitivity of 100% compared with 82% for brush cytology and 89% for biopsy h...

BACKGROUND Gastro-oesophageal candidiasis is a rare infection and appears mainly in debilitated or immunocompromised patients. متن کاملCandidal infection is uncommon in acute oesophagitis: evidence from a non-selected DGH population.
Mucosal candida infection of the lower oesophagus is unusual except in certain groups of patients who are either immuno-suppressed or who have other recognised causes of candidal infection. 1 Invasive oesophageal candidiasis occurs most often in the immunosuppressed, occurring in 10– 20% of patients with myeloproliferative disorders or leukaemia and in up to 74% of patients with AIDS, with an i...
